How to Choose a Remodeling Contractor

After you’ve decided to hire a remodeling contractor to handle the job for you, you’ll want to make sure you pick an experienced contractor you can rely on at every step of the process. Contractors and installers are not necessarily bathroom designers. Typically, the contractors work with designers to help with the overall design, layout, style and selection of materials. You’ll want a contractor who understands the remodeling process and knows how to handle almost any situation. Be careful to select skilled installation professionals who can get the job done properly and on schedule because you won’t want to live too long without your bathroom. It’s a good idea to go over the remodeling process with your contractor in order to get a good feel for their level of experience in all phases of the remodeling process.

Bathroom Remodeling Process

  1. Design – the first step is to design the bathroom remodel project. This includes a layout of the toilet, shower, bath, sinks/vanity and any cabinetry. There are many standard layouts for the most common bathroom sizes and layouts. If possible, try to use the existing plumbing in order to save time and expense.
  2. Demolition – as they say, “Out with the old and in with the new.” Whether your remodeling project is a minor renovation or a complete tear-down there is likely to be some kind of demolition that will take place. Depending on the size of the project the contractor may arrange for a dumpster or a hauling company to take away the old materials.
  3. Roughing-in – after clearing out the bathroom, it’s time to “rough in” the new plumbing and electrical systems so it is ready to receive the new bathroom fixtures and features. An inspection is made by the city or county officials at this stage.
  4. Installation of Shower, Tub and Sinks – the shower, bathtub are installed or built at this time according to the plans. Any required sub flooring, shower pan installation or waterproofing of a wet area is done at this time. In addition, the bathroom sinks are installed.
  5. Floor Tile & Wall Tile Installed – the bathroom floor tile is laid and so is the wall tile. If the project involves heated floor tile the heating system is installed.
  6. Finishing Work – to complete the project, the faucets and fixtures are installed to the shower, tub and sinks. The cabinets are installed along with the lighting and fans. Painting is completed and all the work is double-checked, cleaned and readied for use.

6 Questions to Ask Your Bathroom Remodeling Contractor

After you feel comfortable with the contractor you’ll want to ask these more specific questions before
making a final selection.

  1. What is the Timetable? Ask to see a rough timetable for the project and ask what their confidence is that they can complete the project on the stated time frame.
  2. Are You Licensed & Insured? Make sure the contractor is properly licensed to work in your area and that they are insured.
  3. Can You Provide a List of References? Get a list of references, ideally of people who had a bathroom remodeling or renovation project similar to yours. Ask for 5 to 10 references and call at least 3 of them.
  4. What Subcontractors Will You Use? Learn what work the contractor will do and what work they plan to subcontract out. Plumbing and electrical work is often subcontracted out to licensed specialists.
  5. What Habits Does Your Team Keep Around My Home? Find out what time your contractor’s work crew plans to start and stop work and how they will come and go. Think through issues such as if you need any personal privacy at certain times and how that will be handled. Also, if you have no other means to use the bathroom or take a shower, ask if they can provide a provisional shower or toilet during the process.
  6. How Do You Handle Any Unexpected Issues? No one likes surprises, but sometimes the unexpected happens. Ask how they handle these unexpected events.

Final Selection of your Bathroom Remodeling Contractor

The last step, after you are comfortable you are working with a good, reputable contractor, is to get the work proposal in writing. Look it over and read all the details. Make sure you understand everything and are comfortable with the cost and timing estimates. Ask to go over the project details and ask the contractor if there is anything else that you need to know. You may want to ask what types of things could cause a change to the plan and how those situations would be handled. If everything seems fine, then sign the contract and prepare yourself to get going.
